Odds and preview for the lunchtime kick off:
It’s Groundhog Day as Mauricio Pochettino and his men face Newcastle for their opening game of the season. Last season Tottenham began their campaign with a two nil victory at St James Park.
Neither has had a transfer window which they will want to boast about, although both have managed to maintain their key assets in their players and their managers.
Tottenham had 9 first team players reach the semi finals of the World Cup, all of which only returned to training this week. Whether they will return to the first 11 for their season opener is still up the air. Many won’t be match fit, but Pochettino will be desperate to get the season off to a win.
Rafa Benitez has openly voiced his concerns for the new seasons, but with the recent addition of Solomon Rondon, and a loan return of the influential Kenedy, Benitez should enough at his disposal for another mid table finish.
Tottenham go into the game as favourites, and can be backed for the win at 11/10 with Betfair. Newcastle are as big as 29/10 with Bet365, with the draw at 5/2.
A lot will be determined on the side that Tottenham will have at their disposal. If the season has come a week too soon for Spurs, then the crowd at St James Park could be the critical factor.
We expect a tight encounter. Last season’s meeting hung in balance until Jonjo Shelvey foolishly earned a red for a stamp on Dele Alli, which tipped the balance in Tottenham’s favour.
Newcastle to win 1-0 looks a good price at 11/1 with Bet365, with the opposite scoreline at 7/1.
Harry Kane has yet to net in the month of August for Tottenham and will be determined to end his August drought. Whether he is fit enough to make the starting 11 still remains to be seen, but if he does he is 100/30 to be First Goalscorer with Paddy Power or Evens to Score Anytime with Skybet.
Solomon Rondon found the net against Spurs last season as a West Brom player, and will be looking to get his Newcastle career off to a flyer. He is 8/1 with Bet365 to score first.
The outsiders we’ll be looking out for is Tottenhams Lucas Moura, who has been a hit during pre-season and is 17/4 to score anytime with Coral. Jonjo Shelvey who is always a threat from range can be found at 9/1 with Unibet to score anytime.
