Ego

I used to be a guy who was experiencing the world, and now, I feel like the world and the universe is experiencing a guy.

The physical manifestation of living through the ego-self results in a feeling of void, a spiritual emptiness living with the sense that something is missing in our lives. On the other hand, love, being the opposite of fear, gives us a sense of fullness and spiritual fulfillment. Feeling empty or living in fear is by definition an unnatural expression. Anytime we allow fear or emptiness to come into our hearts and minds, we have separated ourselves from our true selves. Our true selves are literally a part of God, just as every single other person is a part of God. God is all, and all is love. There is nothing else; everything else is simply a contraption of the ego, a manifestation of the illusion of who we believe ourselves to be. It is the ego’s best effort to fill us up with itself.

The ego promises us that if we follow its beliefs, we’ll achieve peace of mind and joy. But in truth, the ego can only offer us what is unreal, temporary and unfulfilling, and fools us into believing it’s real. What is true is eternal, is based in love, and offers us eternal peace of mind and joy. What is false is temporary, and is based on egoic illusions, which can only offer temporary peace of mind and joy, which fades into nothingness, creating a sense of emptiness and a state of confusion. Peace of mind and joy are eternal, and what is eternal cannot be temporary. Temporary peace of mind and joy therefore does not exist. They are illusions created by the ego to keep us from understanding and experiencing real eternal peace of mind and joy.

Freedom of choice is one of our greatest gifts. So don’t judge yourself for having chosen such illusions in the past, for it is those illusions and their lack of fulfillment that have brought you to this point in your life. Now you are truly allowing yourself time to reflect, and to ask if any of the ego’s illusions and lies have brought you true happiness. We already know the answers to these questions. You have already experienced enough pain. Eventually, you’ll recognise that there must be a better way. To recognise means to “know again,” which implies that you knew before. As you begin to recognise your true self or Godself, you will increasingly be unable to tolerate your beliefs in illusions.

As we choose to search inside ourselves, understand that the ego will not go quietly into the night. Our search for light and truth is fearful to the ego, for it resides in darkness. It will use its last resources to defend itself. It will make you as uncomfortable as possible. You will hear the ego, but, at the same time, you will remember where it has taken you before. You have heard its defences before, but now they will no longer work against you. No longer will you choose to blindly follow the ego. Once your change back toward your Godself begins, you’ll clearly see it in your life. Those ruled by ego will begin to slowly fade away, spending less time with you. They may attack you for not being your “old self”, yet you now understand that you cannot live like your old self did, for your old self is not your true self now and never was. As your love and respect for yourself increases so too will your love and respect for all those around you.

You’ll go to new places, perhaps places you thought you would never go and you’ll meet new people. These people and places will serve you in your search for remembrance. Speak your truth. Stay true to yourself. Be yourself.

We just need reminding that peace of mind, love and joy are our inheritance. Peace of mind, love and joy are the main attributes of the Godself. We all have a Godself, because we are simply our Godselves and nothing else. Everything else, including our ego-selves is an illusion we have created to help us live in the illusionary world.

“When the curtain goes down at the end of the drama, the hero and the villain step out, hand in hand, and the audience applaud both, because they know that the hero role and the villain role are only masks. And so you see behind the stage too there is the green room, where after the play is over and before it begins, the masks are taken off. And so behind the scenes, that is to say, in reality, under the surface, you are all the actor, marvellously skilled in playing many parts, and in getting lost in the mazes of your own minds and the entanglements of your own affairs, as if this were the most urgent thing going. But behind the scenes, in the green room, you always have a very tiny sneaking suspicion that you might not be the you that you think you are.

Everyone is looking for something they already have. We are already complete, and it’s realising that we are already complete. Ego tries to convince us we need to get something, this immortality, which we already possess. Ego is the voice in your head which says you are not as good as that other person, maybe you need to do something else to make yourself better to add to yourself. And that is what it is constantly doing, trying to keep us, right now, from loving this and loving this life. We try to hold up an image in this world, someone we are not. And the sooner we let go of this, better things happen because they are just happening.

Once we realise we’re complete, then this life and everything in it becomes a play of form, something to toy with and play with, and make something good out of. It really isn’t something to be worried about, it’s something to have fun with. Nothing you do is going to add anything to you, and nothing you do is going to take anything away from you, so there really is nothing to do except play.

And so the only moment that matters is right now.

When we let go of individual survival, all of our priorities change because we actually see the entire world as our body. We see the suffering of others as our own suffering and we want to help. Perhaps the one thing that keeps us from actually solving all of the other problems in this world, is this persistent flawed thought that we are separate from the world, and maybe it’s time we changed our minds. Every religious tradition, at its core, has been trying to convince us of its importance. And if it’s true, that true end of all human psychological suffering is actually possible, it is the most important thing science could be studying.

Maybe it’s possible that within our lifetimes we can actually eradicate human suffering, and what would the world look like then if every single one of us felt complete, felt whole, felt inner-connected.
