Super Bowl LI
Sunday 5h February 2017 23:30 GMT
NRG Stadium, Houston, Texas.
New England Patriots V Atlanta Falcons
Super Bowl LI is the 51st Super Bowl and the 2nd to be played at the NRG Stadium. The New England Patriots will be making their 9th appearance in the Super Bowl and The Atlanta Falcons their 2nd.
The Patriots have a 50% record in the Super Bowl winning 4 and losing 4 of their 8 previous appearances. Last time they reached it they beat Seattle 28-24 back in the 2014/2015 season. Going into the final quarter the Patriots found themselves down by 10 points but managed to score 2 unanswered touchdowns to give them their 4th victory.
The Falcon’s only appearance was back in 1998 when they faced off against the defending champions The Denver Broncos. Unfortunately for the Falcons Denver were unstoppable that night and beat the Falcons 34-19 to deny them their first Super Bowl.
The Patriots had a good regular season record of 14-2 which was good enough for the number 1 seed in the AFC, losing to Buffalo Bills in week 4 and the Seattle Seahawks in week 10. They had this good record despite missing star quarterback Tom Brady for the 1st 4 games due to suspension following his part in the 2014 post season deflategate incident.
The Patriots have always been known for their fantastic offense and this year is no different as they are ranked as the 3rd overall best offence in the league this regular season. The difference this year is not only do they boast one of the best offenses but they are also ranked 4th best defence in the league so they seem to have it all this year.
The Falcons had a regular season record of 11-5 which was good enough to make them the number 2 ranked team in the NFC. Their quarterback Matt Ryan has been in blistering form all season and is being tipped to take the seasons MVP (most valuable player) award.
The Falcons offence have put up some big numbers through the regular season and find themselves as the number 1 ranked offence in the whole on the NFL. The thing that sets them apart is not do they have arguably the best wide receiver in the game in Julio Jones but they have so many other targets that Matt Ryan uses regularly. There defence has not had the greatest season however they have been improving of late and might have found form at the right time.
Tom Brady is arguable the greatest QB of all time and has won 3 Super Bowl MVP’s and 2 regular season MVP’s. He has played in a record 7 Super Bowls winning 4 rings in the process. His post season record is a very good one having won 24 and lost only 9.
Brady’s main target Rob Gronkowski is injured so Julian Edelman will be Brady’s main receiver.
Matt Ryan has had a season to remember and looks likely to receive the highest honour of season MVP. In his rookie year back in 2007 Ryan started all 16 games for the Falcons and reached the play offs with a record of 11-5 in the regular season. Prior to this season Ryan’s play off record was not a good one losing 4 and only winning one game, however that record now stands at 3-4 and he has a chance to even that up with a win on the biggest stage.
Ryan’s main target is likely going to be Julio Jones who is considered one of the best WR in the game at the moment. At 1.91 metres tall and a leap to match he is a nightmare for any defender.
New England Patriots are best price with most of the big firms @4/6.
Atlanta Falcons are best price with BetFred @27/20.
The total points line is over/under 58.5 @10/11 with most of the firms.
Julian Edelman first TD scorer is @10/1 with most of the firms.
Julio Jones first TD scorer is @8/1 with most of the firms.
My bet will be for Atlanta running back to go in first for TD and he is @8/1 with most.
Last years Super Bowl broke all previous viewing figures and I have a feeling this years could do the same.
This years HT show will be brought to you by Lady Gaga.
Country singer Luke Bryan will be singing the national anthem before the game.
