Liverpool F.C V Southampton F.C – 20:00 GMT

Wednesday 25th January 2017
Available on Sky Sports 1 & Sky Sports 1 HD

Southampton take a 1-0 lead into the 2nd leg despite Liverpool dominating the majority of the possession. Nathan Redmond scored the winning goal however, he could easily have easily scored a hat-trick on another day. Despite their lack of ball possession the Saints looked like they might score on every counter attack and Liverpool will be the happier with the scoreline in the end.

Liverpool have a love for the League Cup and are the most successful team in the competitions history winning it a massive 8 times (including 4 in a row between 1981 and 1984) and finished runners up 4 times.

Southampton are looking to reach the final for the first time since finishing runners up once back in 1979 to Nottingham Forest.

Liverpool managed to reach the final of last years competition and lost in a penalty shootout to rivals Manchester City following a 1-1 draw.

Southampton managed to reach the quarters last year but where beaten 6-1 by Liverpool after going ahead in just 41 seconds through a Mane header, of all players. They will be looking to avoid something similar here, Mane won’t play a part in this tie. You can view those quarter final highlights below.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have been struggling of late, having started the season in blistering form they have dipped recently and maybe the winter fixtures are taking their toll on the German’s players. They have played 6 times since the turn of the year in all competitions and have managed to win just 1, a 1-0 win over League 2 side Plymouth Argyle. Last time out they lost 3-2 at home to the then joint bottom club Swansea in the Premier League. A win here could certainly do a lot to turn around recent fortunes.

Claude Puel’s men have been in much better form of late having struggled to live up to expectations for most of the season. They have won 3 of their last 4 games including last time out with a 3-0 win over Premier League champions Leicester. Their only loss in that period was a 1-0 defeat away to Burnley in the Premier League. They could use recent momentum here to help them overhaul a Liverpool side looking to bounce back.

The Reds had not lost a game at home for over a year prior to this weeks loss to Swansea and will be confident they can overturn the tie in front of the Kop.

The Saints away record this season has not been great, they have only won 3 of their 16 away fixtures this season in all competitions, however a draw or even a defeat by 1 goal may be enough if they manage to score as away goals count after extra time.

Be careful with your bets in this type of game as you can back Liverpool to win the match @1/2 with most companies but you can also back them to qualify for the final @10/11 with Coral.

If you fancy the draw you can back that @18/5 with BetVictor in 90mins.

To win in 90 minutes Southampton are as big as @13/2 with Bet365 and Boylesport. If you want to back them to qualify you can get @1/1 with a few of the firms.

A couple of interesting bets on this one, Liverpool to win on penalties is prices @28/1 which is worth a small bet. Or Southampton to win in extra time is @11/1.
